Harrisburg, PA (February 19, 2015)—The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) announced today that Representative William F. Adolph, Jr. has been re-elected as Chairman of the PHEAA Board of Directors. Senator Wayne D. Fontana was re-elected as Vice Chairman of the Board.

Representative Adolph has represented Delaware County's 165th Legislative District since 1989. He currently serves as the Majority Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. He was first elected by his colleagues to serve in this role in January 2010 and was recently re-elected to his second term as Majority Chairman. He has served as Chairman of the PHEAA Board since 2007.

"As a legislative leader, and as a parent and grandparent, I've learned that an affordable higher education is critically important to the strength of our families and our Commonwealth," said Representative Adolph, PHEAA Board Chairman. "It's an honor to work alongside my fellow Board members; each of whom brings their own unique expertise and professionalism to the service of Pennsylvania students and families."

PHEAA was created in 1963 by the Pennsylvania General Assembly and has since evolved into one of the nation's leading student aid organizations. The agency's earnings are used to support its public service mission and to pay its operating costs, including administration of the Pennsylvania State Grant and other student aid programs. This saves taxpayers millions of dollars each year while ensuring that every dollar that is appropriated to a student aid program goes directly to support Pennsylvania students.

"Serving as Vice Chairman of the PHEAA Board of Directors allows me to be a stronger and more effective advocate for Pennsylvania students and families - especially with regard to higher education access and affordability," said Senator Fontana. "I look forward to working with Chairman Adolph and my colleagues to address the many challenges facing today's students and the higher education community."

Senator Fontana has represented the 42nd Senatorial District, Allegheny County, since 2005. He serves as the Chair of the Senate Community, Economic & Recreational Development Committee and the Senate Urban Affairs and Housing Committee. He is also a member of the Judiciary, Law & Justice, Ethics & Official Conduct and Policy Committees. In addition, the senator serves on the Legislative Arts Caucus, Community College Caucus, Life Sciences & Biotechnology Caucus, and Lupus Caucus.

Senate Democrats recently elected Senator Fontana to serve as Democratic Caucus Chairman. The caucus chairman sets the daily caucus agenda and leads the discussion on bills that are under consideration on the Senate floor. In this capacity, he is in a unique position to further champion the higher education needs of Pennsylvania students and their families.

PHEAA has also announced that the following members have been elected to serve on the Board's Executive Committee:

  • Senator Robert M. Tomlinson (R-Bensalem) - Chairman
  • Representative James R. Roebuck, Jr. (D-Philadelphia) - Vice Chairman
  • Senator Vincent J. Hughes (D-Philadelphia)
  • Representative Sandra J. Major (R-Montrose)
  • Honorable Roy Reinard (Holland)
  • Chancellor Timothy R. Thyreen
