Representative William Adolph Re-Elected as Chairman; Senator Wayne Fontana Elected Vice Chairman of PHEAA Board
Board leadership has directed reforms strengthening PHEAA's operations
Harrisburg, PA (February 24, 2011)—The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) announced today that Representative William F. Adolph has been re-elected to chair the PHEAA Board of Directors for the fifth consecutive year. Senator Wayne Fontana has been elected vice chairman of the PHEAA Board.
Representative Adolph has represented Delaware County's 165th Legislative District since 1989. He serves as the majority Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and as a member of the House Rules Committee. He was appointed to the PHEAA Board in 2001, serving as a member of the Board's Executive Committee from 2003 through 2006.
"This Board has made great strides in cutting costs, boosting efficiencies and rebuilding the way PHEAA does business over the past four years; saving millions of dollars, while serving our citizens more effectively," said Representative Adolph. "Along with our fellow Board members, we will continue to guide the Agency forward as we work to address the many challenges affecting the student aid environment and our many families struggling to afford a higher education."
During Adolph's tenure as Board Chairman, PHEAA has successfully restructured its business model to better adapt to the changing student loan marketplace. This has been accomplished through many operational and accountability initiatives, including the establishment of the strictest business travel and expense reimbursement policy of any Commonwealth agency, an aggressive cost-cutting campaign and effectively securing a new contract to service the nation's growing federal student loan portfolio.
"This leadership opportunity allows me to become a greater advocate for Pennsylvania students, families and schools – especially in regards to ensuring access to an affordable higher education, said Senator Fontana. "I look forward to working with Chairman Adolph and my colleagues on the PHEAA Board to address the diverse and evolving needs of Pennsylvania students and the higher education community."
Senator Fontana has represented the 42nd Senatorial District, Allegheny County, since 2005. He serves as the Democratic Caucus Administrator and serves as a member on the Senate Appropriations and Public Health & Welfare Committees. Senator Fontana has served as a member of the PHEAA Board since 2008.
